1 Bell work Put everything away except for a few sheets of lined paper and your list of transitions (on back of the pink packet). We will go over the schedule for the next few days and review some basic information before beginning the Midterm Writing Benchmark. You may take and use the following notes during the Benchmark.

2 Review of Rhetoric When trying to persuade an audience, the Greeks taught us to use: Ethos – appeal to the credibility of the source Pathos – appeal to emotions Logos – appeal to logic using facts, statistics, examples Remember these when writing persuasively and use them throughout your paper.

3 Review of Writing Essays
Figure out the MLA entry for the articles first, so you will know what to use in the in-text citations. (Author’s last name or “Title in quotes if no author” and if there is a page number given.) Analyze the prompt and figure out what you are supposed to write about. (Look for clue words and the prompt follows them. Figure out how to split into 3 sections.)

4 Review of Writing Essays
Once you know what your three sections are going to be, read through the information and annotate the parts that would be best to use. Read it once without annotating and then read it a second time. Consider color-coding or numbering parts to quote to separate what you might use in different paragraphs.

5 Review of Writing Essays
Once you have thought through how you are going to approach the essay, then create an outline (as you have been taught to do). Remember to write good topic sentences with transitions, embed quotations (concrete details – CDs) including transitions, use a 2:1 ratio of commentaries to concrete details (CMs), and write good concluding sentences (CS). Be sure to use good transitions throughout!

6 Review of Writing Essays
For your introduction, establish why this topic is timely and important. For your conclusion, review why the topic is timely and important. Why should we care about it? What should be done? This is a persuasive argument paper, so be convincing!
