CHEMICAL EXPOSURE

2. WHY THIS RULE? Chemicals are hazardous materials
From grease to acid, we often use chemicals, consequently we have to be aware and educate employees
All chemicals are different, we have to know where to find their specificities, how to protect ourselves and to know good practices
Ask to participants to define which items are concerned, then on the next slide, clarify with the definitions.

3. RULE DEFINITION
Prior to using chemicals we must know all the chemical products hazards listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

4. I MUST Ensure the MSDS is available and know the chemical risks
An MSDS contains 16 sections which describe the chemical
MSDSs must be available on work sites, in case of a problem the Medical Team will know how to act
Ensure that I have appropriate chemical PPE
Depending on the chemical properties the PPE can change (e.g.: gloves)
Wearing PPE that is not suitable for the chemical you are handling is equal to not wearing any PPE at all

5. I MUST Identify the location of the eye-care stations and
emergency shower before starting the task
In the case of exposure, we don’t have time to think but we must focus on the exposure treatment
Store chemical products on top of a retention tank
Chemicals are harmful to the environment
Make sure your retention tank is big enough to contain all the chemicals with which you are working

6. I MUST NOT
Use water bottle or others alimentary liquid containers to store chemicals
Chemicals can be confused with water and colleagues can use it for drinking or washing. The consequences can be dramatic
Every container must be suitable, dedicated to chemical use and be labeled
Drink, eat or smoke while working with chemicals
Chemicals can contaminate us through ingestion, inhalation and penetration
Before and after chemical use, you must always wash your hands
