Adjectives and Predicate Adjectives 23
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. It offers more information about the word it modifies. Adjectives often come before the noun or pronoun being modified. Adjectives answer three questions: What Kind? Ex. Wooden canoe Which one? Ex. Downtown market How many? Ex. Two apples Proper adjectives are capitalized. Ex. We ate Thai food. A predicate adjective follows a linking verb and modifies the subject of a sentence. Ex. The windows on the back of the shed appeared broken. Broken is a predicate adjective following the linking verb appeared. It modifies window, the subject of the sentence.
