2. Structural Function Presidential- Executive elected separate from the legislative body. (United States) The United States is a Presidential structure because the President is elected separate from the Congress. The People elect the President The People elect The Congress

Parliamentary- Executive is elected from & by the legislative body. (United Kingdom) The UK is a parliamentary structure because the Prime Minister is elected from and by the Ministers of Parliament as their leader. People elect Parliament elect Prime Minister

Anarchy- absence of a ruler, ruling class, political party or parties, or power elite. Self-rule Social harmony through voluntary cooperation. Political disorder & confusion

Dictatorship- Rule by one person. This person usually takes power by force. A dictator is often a military leader. (Pakistan) Monarchy- Rule by one person or family. It is passed down from generation to generation. The ruler is known as King or Queen. (Jordan)

Democracy- Rule by the People. A. Direct Democracy- all of the people make decisions. (small population) B) Representative Democracy- (Republic) The people elect representatives who make decisions for them. (large population) Question to consider- Which definition best fits the United States? Explain.

Totalitarian- The government controls everything the people do. Charisma, sense of connection: Leader to people.(North Korea) Authoritarian- the government controls the people’s political life. Desire by leadership to maintain status quo. (China) Democratic- The people control the government. (United States) Anarchistic- Nobody controls the government, there is no government. (Somalia) 4. Capitalism- private ownership of the means of production. (United States) Socialism- public, or government control of the means of production. (Cuba) Is the United States entirely capitalistic? Explain.
