1 “Executions Worldwide Hit Highest Level In 25 Years But Lose Popularity In U.S.”

2 Even as the death penalty grows out of favor in the United States, the number of executions worldwide has risen to its highest level in 25 years, a new report, released on Wednesday, on the death penalty from Amnesty International finds. The human rights group recorded 1,634 executions in Amnesty's senior death penalty campaigner says the numbers can seem a bit misleading because the rise was driven mostly by three countries — Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which accounted for 89 percent of all executions. "The spike in executions, particularly in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, leads to this global number that is so much larger than we've ever seen in recent years but that contradicts the fact that it's happening in such a small number of countries around the world," Clark said. The global trend, Clark said, is clear: The death penalty is in decline worldwide. One big caveat in the statistics is that they do not include China, which Amnesty believes executes the most people in the world. The data, however, are held as a state secret. The United States executed 28 people in 2015, but has significantly curtailed its use of capital punishment.

The win also marked the 11th national championship for UConn head coach Geno Auriemma who surpassed coach John Wooden on the all-time championship win list — for both college and pro basketball. Auriemma is now tied with coach Phil Jackson for basketball championship wins. In his competitive diving career, four-time Olympic diving gold medalist and five-time world champion Greg Louganis has been all over the world. Now he'll be in one place that's eluded him for years: your kitchen table. Wheaties announced that Louganis — along with two other former Olympians, hurdler Edwin Moses and swimmer Janet Evans, will be featured on the cereal boxes as part of the revamped "legends" series.
