Types of Reactions
2
Classifying Reactions
Synthesis: 2 or more substances react to form a single substance. A + B → C Ex: 2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl 2H2 + O2 → 2H20
3
Decomposition: a compound breaks into 2 or more substances
Decomposition: a compound breaks into 2 or more substances. AB → A + B Ex: CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
4
Single Replacement: one element takes the place of another element
Single Replacement: one element takes the place of another element. A + BC → B + AC Ex: Cu + 2AgNO3 → 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2
5
Double Replacement: two different compounds exchange positive ions and form two new compounds. AB + CD → AD + CB Ex: Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI → PbI2 + 2KNO3
6
Combustion: a substance reacts with water, producing heat, light, carbon dioxide, and water. A + O2 → CO2 + H2O Ex: CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O
7
Reactions as Electron Transfers
Oxidation: synthesis reaction in which oxygen combines with metal 2CaO + O2 → 2CaO Reduction: a neutral atom gains electrons O + 2e- → O2- Oxidation and reduction always occur together.
