Do Now: Switch thesis statements with a partner. Assess the statement using the following checklist:
Does the statement make a concise assertion about your topic?
Is the assertion limited to only one idea?
Is the assertion specific and significant?
Does the statement at least imply your purpose?
Is the statement unified so that the parts relate to each other?

2. The first thing to do is to “hook” your readers. To do this, use:
A vivid scene
An interesting detail
A striking quotation
A unique question

3. Next, provide the poem’s title and author and a brief summary of the meaning of the text and necessary background.
Ground your reader in your essay!

4. Finally, end the introduction with the single-sentence thesis statement that you wrote earlier which includes your topic + opinion because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3.

The poem “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley focuses on the remains of a powerful, egotistical ruler who had his likeness captured in a statue so that he might be always remembered. Yet a traveler hundreds of years later ironically discovers this statue broken and half buried in desert sand. Nothing else remains, suggesting that power and fame are fleeting and, no matter how conceited a person may be in his lifetime, death and time will reduce him to nothing.
