MDHHS RFP for community coalitions focused on obesity reduction
RFP to assist community coalitions in implementing components that will further healthy lifestyles and help prevent obesity Healthy Eating Goal: Increase the percentage of individuals in the state who consume foods consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables Priority objective: Improve the availability and promotion of healthy foods in community settings that reach underserved adults and families Work with owners or leadership in retail and implement promotion and messaging campaigns that increase awareness of healthy items and limit unhealthy messages in retail, restaurants, and similar settings

Category Strategy Placement Place healthier foods and beverages in multiple prominent locations throughout the store Price Offer price discounts for healthy eating options or none for unhealthy eating options Promotion Use point-of-purchase signs to promote healthier foods and beverages “Healthy Grocers Award” Benefit your business Improve the health of the community Healthy Eating Research – Building evidence to prevent childhood obesity, RWJF Improve the healthfulness of foods and beverages sold by existing food retailers in underserved communities

Fruit and vegetable promotion Healthy recipe promotion Discounts on healthy bundle packages during cooking demonstrations Bundle placement and promotion Produce structure changes Produce promotion ties nutritional benefits to Dietary Guidelines for Americans Recipes selected for promoted produce 1) acquired from USDA ChooseMyPlate.gov and 2) work well for local grocery stores Promoted materials are English/Spanish bilingual and are family-friendly

Cooking demonstrations will be conducted by Chef Paul Penney, who is part of the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture First Lady Michelle Obama is calling on chefs to join the fight against childhood obesity by adopting a school and working with teachers, parents, school nutrition professionals and administrators to help educate children about food and to show them that healthy eating can be fun

Next Steps Cooking demonstrations and other interventions scheduled to take place through September 2016 Communications campaign (Facebook & Twitter) will continue to promote Dietary Guideline-based resources through September 2016 Strategic planning session to determine coalition- wide direction Exploration of other ways to support MOTION Coalition activities (system or policy interventions)
