There are two strategies posted around the room that are especially useful when checking for understanding

3. Objective/TAP Connection
By the end of Clusters, teachers will learn four strategies to check for student understanding (essential standards).
TAP Connection: Measure student performance throughout the quarter

4. Response Cards
simultaneously hold up by all students to indicate response
*pre-printed (kinetic/potential energy, Yes/No)
*write-on

5. Hand Signals
require engagement from the whole group and allow the teacher to check for understanding in large groups

6. Kagan Four Corners -Learning through movement and discussion.
-Students are presented with a controversial statement or are asked a question.
-In each of the four corners of the classroom, an opinion or response is posted. Students express their opinion or response by standing in front of one of four statements, and then talking to others about why they have chosen their corner. (strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree)
Practice: Second quarter is the best quarter of the school year.

7. Kagan: Timed Pair Share
Timed Pair Share is a Kagan Cooperative Learning Structure where partners take timed turns listening and sharing. It becomes a formative assessment tool when the teacher listens and notes the responses of the students in order to assess their understanding. Steps in the process include:
1) Teacher announces a topic and states how long each student will have to share; 2) Teacher provides think time; 3) In pairs, Partner A shares; Partner B listens; 4) Partner B responds; 5) Partners switch roles.
Teacher notes the information obtained from listening to the students and uses the information for next steps in teaching the objective.
