Unit 3-1 Physical and Chemical Changes!

Physical Change A physical change is when an object undergoes a change that does not alter their chemical properties. Examples: Cutting or breaking an object Any phase change (solid, liquid, gas) Adding food coloring to food Biting an apple

Chemical Change A chemical change is when a substance reacts with another substance and a NEW SUBSTANCE IS FORMED! Examples: Rusting of iron or tarnishing of silver Cooking of eggs The browning of an apple after it is bitten Burning (like oil or wood)

Remember: A chemical change always means that 1 or more new substances
are formed!

Chemical Changes

Physical Properties Physical properties are properties that DO NOT change the chemical nature of matter. Examples are: Color Smell Freezing/melting point Boiling/vaporization point Attraction to magnets Density Hardness of a mineral

Chemical Properties Chemical properties are properties that DO change the chemical nature of matter. Examples: heat of combustion reactivity with water Flammability pH (how acidic something is) Corrosion
