1 Eukaryotic Cell Structures
7th grade Life Science Betsy Sanford, LMMS

2 Living Things… …are called organisms. …are made of cells.
Cells have parts that do certain jobs. Cell parts are called organelles.

3 Support & Protection Cells…
…have support and protection. All cells have a cell membrane (10) that allows materials in and out of the cell All cells have cytoplasm (12), a thick fluid that surrounds the organelles. Plant cells have a rigid cell wall(5) for extra support.

4 Eukaryotic vs. Prokaryotic Cells…
Eukaryotic cells have a control center called a nucleus (8). The nucleus contains a chemical code called DNA (3). The DNA provides the instructions for cell structure and function. Prokaryotic cells have DNA, but no nucleus.

5 Gathering Energy Eukaryotic Cells…
…need resources to live. Mitochondria (1) breakdown food using oxygen and generating energy for the cell. Chloroplasts (6) soak up sunlight and use it to make food that can be used for energy.

6 Storage & Clean Up Eukaryotic Cells…
…have storage and clean up organelles. Vacuoles (4) are storage areas (much larger in plants due to food production). Lysosomes (11) breakdown wastes and worn out cell parts.
