Sea shanties means songs to sing at sea!

On a ship like this the sailors would have lots of jobs to do…

These jobs often required a coordinated pushing or pulling action.
Sea shanties were sung to motivate sailors during these strenuous tasks and to keep everyone moving together!

Sea shanties often used a “call and response” format
Sea shanties often used a “call and response” format. A “shantyman” with a strong, loud voice would improvise lines to which the rest of the workers would respond.
