Cell Division - Mitosis
2
Cell Division Cell division is when a cell duplicates itself, making two cells out of one Cell division is how organisms can grow and develop
3
Cell Division There are two types of cell division Mitosis Meiosis
4
Mitosis Mitosis is a form of cell division in which a cell’s nucleus and nuclear material divide to create two identical daughter cells Only somatic cells undergo mitosis Somatic cells are all the cells in your body that are not sex cells (eggs and sperm)
5
Stages of Mitosis Mitosis is divided into stages: Interphase Prophase
Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
6
Interphase In Interphase…
Cell grows and carries out normal cell processes DNA replicates (copies itself)
7
Mitosis - Prophase In Prophase… Nuclear membrane disintegrates
DNA condenses into chromosomes Mitotic spindles begin to form between the poles (opposite ends) of the cell
8
Mitosis - Metaphase In Metaphase…
Chromosomes attach to mitotic spindles and align along the equator (middle)
9
Mitosis - Anaphase In Anaphase…
Mitotic spindles shorten, moving chromosome strands to opposite poles
10
Mitosis - Telophase In Telophase… Chromosomes reach poles of cell
Nuclear envelope re-forms Almost two separate cells but the cytoplasm of both cells is attached still
11
Cytokinesis In cytokinesis, the cytoplasm is divided to create two distinct daughter cells In animal cells, a cleavage furrow forms at the equator of the cell and pinches inward until the cell divides in two
