1 Circulatory System

2 Circulatory System Notes
Function Carries products from the digestive and respiratory systems throughout the body by way of the blood Carries wastes to excretory system for removal

3 Circulatory System Notes
Works with Digestive System Works with Respiratory System Carries nutrients from food to cells of body to provide them with energy Carries oxygen from lungs to cells for cellular respiration Carries carbon dioxide from cells to lungs for removal

4 Circulatory System Notes
Heart Muscle that pumps blood to body Atrium = chamber of heart that collects blood Ventricle = chamber of heart that pumps blood Septum = wall inside heart separating left and right

5 Circulatory System Notes
Blood Vessels Tubes that carry blood, vary in size and direction Artery = vessel that carries blood AWAY from heart; blood has A LOT of oxygen and nutrients Vein = vessel that carries blood TO heart; blood is LOW in oxygen and nutrients Capillary = small vessel where gases and nutrients move into cells of body, connect arteries to veins

6 Circulatory System Notes
Blood Pressure Blood pressure simulation Measures how much force blood is putting on walls of blood vessels A ‘vital sign’ that shows heart health Measures high pressure (systolic) and low pressure (diastolic) Normal for teens is around 110/70

7 Circulatory System Notes
Blood Liquid organ that transports gases and nutrients around body Comes in four types A, B, AB, and O Mostly liquid with solids and gases Made of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets Plasma is water, glucose, nutrients, and gases RBC carry oxygen throughout body WBC fight infection Platelets help blood clot

8 Circulatory System Notes
Problems Angina = chest pain Heart attack = flow of blood to the heart is blocked, causing pain, irregular heartbeat, and damage to heart, can be fatal Aneurysm = bulge or swelling in a blood vessel, causing possible rupture or blockage Stroke = blood flow in the brain is interrupted, can paralyze or even be fatal
