1 August 19th 2014 States of Matter

2 Do Now If you never received a physical science textbook line up along the sinks at the back of the room and wait for instructions What is the definition of a… (please write a full sentence for each) Solid Liquid Gas Give an example of each above

3 Homework Read pages 45-52 in the Holt textbook
Section 2.2 Answer the 8 questions at the end of the section Homework goes into your States of Matter tab There will be a test on Friday, you will receive a study guide tomorrow There will also be a binder check, you will receive a check list tomorrow

4 Objectives SWBAT identify properties of the states of matter
SWBAT understand that all matter consists of atoms Essential Question How do I describe the difference between the states of matter according to their mass, volume, density, shape, and particle arrangement?

5 Solids Liquids and Gases
What do you know from the Do Now

6 New Unit Create a new divider tab Matter Sticky Notes
Atoms and States of Matter Add paper to new unit sheets

7 Vocabulary Physical Change
Change in which the form of the matter changes but not its composition.

8 Physical properties Graphic organizer for solid liquid and gas
Definite Shape? Definite Volume Particle Movement Solid Liquid Gas Yes Yes Vibrates No Yes Fluid No No Rapid

9 Independent practice Look at the Venn Diagram and complete as much as you can. You can just write the number if you want Read the passage about solids, liquids, and gasses. Highlight the word or phrase where you found each answer Complete the Venn Diagram This should be done independently and it should be silent You have 10 minutes to complete this activity

10 Check your work Compare your Venn Diagram with the people at your table and discuss the best section for each phrase We have 7 minutes to compare answers If your table can not come to a conclusion about where to put a phrase, we will go over it as a class

11 Whole class review the Venn Diagram

12 Solid 1 5 8 13 11 15 Gas Liquid 2 3 9 14 18 6 7 12 16 17 4 10

13 Answer the essential question
How do I describe the difference between the states of matter according to their mass, volume, density, shape, and particle arrangement?

14 Exit ticket On sheet of paper
