EXCRETORY SYSTEM
2
FUNCTIONS OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Provides a way for wastes to be removed from the body. waters salts nitrogen wastes (urea) drugs and poisons The removal process is called…… EXCRETION
3
PARTS OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Kidneys Nephrons Ureter Urinary Bladder Urethra “Helper Organs” Liver Skin
4
KIDNEY Filters wastes out of the blood Maintains homeostasis
Acid-base balance Blood pressure Outer section of kidneys has little filter factories called nephrons
5
NEPHRON Filters the blood in the kidneys
It reabsorbs what is needed and excretes the rest as urine. Capsule: cup shaped structure in the nephron
6
URETER Tube that connects the kidneys to the bladder
Passageway for urine to go to the bladder
7
URINARY BLADDER Muscular sac that stores urine
8
URETHRA Passageway from bladder to the outside of the body to get rid of urine
9
“HELPER ORGANS” Liver: acts as a filter Skin:
Gets rid of unneeded amino acids Can turn poisons into harmless substances Skin: contains sweat glands that get rid of excess salts, water and urea Helps to maintain proper body temperature
10
SKIN Dermis: inner layer Epidermis: outer layer Blood vessels
