5 Europeans build forts along the west coast of Africa

6 They traded muskets, tools, and cloth for gold, ivory and slaves

7 Slave demand in the Americas increases when the encomienda system is abolished

8 The slave trade developed into a huge and profitable business

9 European slave traders bought their slaves from African rulers in exchange for textile, metalwork, rum, tobacco, weapons, and gunpowder

10 African rulers thus expanded further into Africa to fill the European demand

13 Middle Passage Journey of slave ships from western Africa to America where they were sold

14 3. New States Emerge:

15 With Slave Trade… Many African kingdoms disappear. 2 African Kingdoms Emerge: Asante – Present Day Ghana Oyo- Present Day Nigeria

17 Cape Town Settlement was built by the Dutch at the southern tip of Africa

18 Boers Dutch people that settled in southern Africa

19 Boers pushed further and further into Africa searching for ivory and new lands to herd

20 The Boers often battled African tribes including the Zulu

21 In 1815 the British take control of Cape Town

22 The Great Trek Fleeing the British the Boers expand further north into Africa New wars between the Boers and African tribes begin

23 Guns vs. Spears The Boers have military superiority over the Zulus and other Africans
