4 Internet Browser: Keyboard Shortcuts
Function Keys: ALT & CRTL(Control) keys are modifier keys. When pressed in combination with other keys, they become “keyboard shortcuts” Ctrl N = opens a new browser window Ctrl W = closes a browser window Alt  = same function as “back” button Alt  = same function as “forward” button Ctrl F = search for specific word or phrase Ctrl P = opens print dialog box Ctrl C = copies highlighted text Ctrl V = pastes copied text to designated place F5 = Refreshes web page Alt Home = takes you to first page opened when accessing internet February 19 click!

5 Practice 1 Open web browser to the Kitsap Regional Library home page and click on “Local Information”. Then use the following: Ctrl F to find “Kitsap Sun” Alt  go back to KRL Home page (where you started) Alt  go forward to local information Alt Home to return once again to KRL Home page (where you started) February 19 click!

6 Internet: Free Web and Hidden Web
Free Web: That portion of the World Wide Web that is indexed by conventional search engines such as Google or Yahoo, and can be accessed without logging in to a site or paying a fee. Hidden Web: That portion of the World Wide Web that is not accessible by conventional search engines. The content of most of these sites comes from specialized databases or applications which are not public. They block search engines from accessing or indexing their content. These sites generally require registration and/or subscription. February 19 click!

7 Practice 2 1. Use Google to find Consumer Reports website and click on
Digital Cameras then click on Ratings. (Enter the words Consumer Reports in the Google search engine field.) February 19 click!

8 Subscription Databases & Websites
The Investor’s Business Daily website is an example of a subscription website. Generally on the website Home Page they have a login for “user name” and “password”. Later on today, we will demonstrate how to access many subscription databases through the KRL website. KRL has paid a subscription fee for their library users for a number of databases, many of which you can access from your home computer using your library card. February 19 click!

9 Internet Browser: Navigation Tools – Using Search History
Favorites: You can save your favorite web pages and websites in in the browser tool called “Favorites”. Then you can simply click on the saved link and go directly to what you want to see. History: The address bar of the browser captures recently typed addresses. As soon as you begin to type the website address, if you recently viewed that site, it will pop up. February 19 click!

10 Practice 3 Open the browser at the “Home Page” (www.KRL.org).
Click on Movie and Music Lovers (bottom left-hand side of page) Click on Internet Movie Database (under “Content and Review Sources) Open Browser “Favorites” Save the address for Internet Movie Database in “Favorites” Begin to type in in the address bar and note that the complete address pops up. You can click on this to go directly to site without finishing typing in the complete address. February 19 click!

11 Web Navigation & Searching Strategies
Web Addresses: If you know the web address ( ex. you can directly enter the address in the browser address bar. Search Engine: Using Google or one of the other search engines, you can enter words or phrases to find web pages which match your search criteria. Web Directory: Much like a subject directory (yellow pages in the phone book) you can trace a subject in which you’re interested to many websites. Subscription Database: KRL has a number of subscription databases which can be used for searching out specific, detailed information. To use these outside the library you will need your library card. 12 Practice 4 Keywords: Advanced Search:
Using Google ( enter zoo Note how many pages are found by the search engine Now add the word washington (zoo washington) Note that fewer pages are found Now add the word seattle (zoo washington seattle) Note that even fewer pages are found Advanced Search: Using Google do a search on peanut butter in the past 3 months with only .gov domains February 19 click!

13 Practice 5 Web Directory: Subscription Databases:
Go the Librarian’s Index to the Internet ( Choose a category of your interest and search down to find websites that cover the material of your interest. Subscription Databases: Go to the KRL home page ( Click on Electronic Resources These are KRL’s subscription databases that cover many areas of interest – medical, home, literature, magazines, etc. Click on Telephone Directories Click on Reference USA Search out a family or friend’s phone number February 19 click!

14 Practice 5 (continued) Subscription Databases:
Go back to Electronic Resources on the KRL home page Click on Magazines, Newspapers, and Journal Articles Click on Proquest Do a search on Pluto Click on Reading Recommendations Click on Novelist Click on Browse Lists tab then Explore Fiction>Adults Explore any of the genres of interest to you February 19 click!

15 Web Resource Credibility: Checking a Variety of Sources
Information can be found in a variety of different places on the web. Sometimes it is difficult to know which information is the most reliable. One Strategy for verifying credibility is to look in more than one place and compare. Some Options (in no particular order): Use a Search Engine (Google, Yahoo, etc.) Use a web directory (Librarians Index to the Internet , , etc.) Use the Library Catalog for print, audio, & media resources Consult subscription databases February 19 click!

17 Classroom Demonstration of Genealogy Subscription Database
Find a picture of the actual handwritten census sheet that the census worker filled out at my great-great grand-father’s farm in 1860, just before the Civil War. February 19 click!

18 Printing Tips and Strategies
In this skill set, students will learn how to: Highlight text, using the mouse, to print a selection of information rather than an entire page or an entire document. February 19 click!

19 Printing Selected Text
Place cursor just before the text to be highlighted Click and hold left mouse button and drag mouse pointer over text to be highlighted – text will be highlighted in blue When all of the text is highlighted let go of mouse button To Print the Selected Text: Click on File > choose Print > in Print Dialog box under Page Range choose Selection -- only the highlighted text is sent to the printer February 19 click!

20 Practice 6 Printing specific text:
Open the KRL Home page ( Click on Wireless Service Click on Technical Information Highlight the text about connecting to the Wi-Fi network in the library On the browser bar, select File->Print->Choose Selection to print the highlighted text Go back to Electronic Resources on the KRL home page Click on Research Corner Click on Legal Information Click on Revised Code of Washington then look for the link that says Print Version See the different print view versus the webpage “graphic” view February 19 click!

21 E-Commerce and Online Shopping Security
The American Bar Association has created a website that is a useful resource for the online shopper. ( This website covers: Security Privacy Payment Seller Product Terms Delivery Records Compliants February 19 click!

22 Practice 7 Safe Shopping Online: Type in your browser address bar
Open the website and read through some of the information that is available on this website Open the webpage for a handy one page list of security tips to keep in mind while shopping online. Type in your browser address bar Click on “Cart” Note the padlock symbol and the “https” prefix February 19 click!

23 Practice 8 Time for personal interest web searching:
Take the remaining class time to search for something of personal interest to you. Examples might be: Research information about a prescription drug someone in the family uses (hint – in KRL Electronic Resources you can search the Health Information section ( Search for a new novel to read using an award list (hint – you can use the KRL Electronic Resources database Novelist then click on the Browse Lists tab) ( ) Check out the online price of an air ticket to Hawaii (hint – you can use to find this kind of information Check out the price of a new washing machine, lawnmower, or water heater (hint – among many retailers you could check out Genealogy – look up a census record of an ancestor (hint – you can use the KRL Electronic Resources database HeritageQuest Online ( ) February 19 click!
