2. Theme
Before Christ ascended, He taught His disciples that He would not leave them without someone to help them in their ministry. He promised to send the Holy Spirit.

3. I. The Spirit Regenerates
John 3:1-21
A. Christ’s interview with Nicodemus teaches that the Spirit regenerates the unbeliever.

4. II. Spirit Empowers for Witness
John 16:7-11
A. The Christian is in the world to help bring men to Christ.
1. When the believer witnesses, the Spirit uses his words to convict the sinner’s conscience of the fact of sin.
B. The Spirit will especially help when we are asked to witness under trying circumstances. Mt. 10:20, Mk. 13:11

5. II. Spirit Empowers for Witness
C. The event that began the Spirit’s special empowering for witness was Pentecost. Lk. 24:49
1. The Spirit of God descended on those who had believed.
2. He has done the same ever since to every person who believes.

6. III. Spirit Instructs in the Truth
John 14:26
A. The disciples then…
1. Special help in remembering & under- standing the significance of what Jesus said
2. This is how they wrote the New Testament
B. The believers today…
1. Helps us understand the truth
2. Helps us remember the truth at import- ant times of ministry & meditation Jn 16:13

7. III. Spirit Instructs in the Truth
C. All this instruction in truth comes through the vehicle of the written Word of God. Jn 6:63
D. The central point of the Spirit’s work of instruction is to increase the believer’s knowledge of Christ. Jn 16:14
