What is IRB? Institutional Review Board
Ensures compliance with research ethics People must be informed of what they are participating in and why Government regulated for any research done IRB is not needed for formative evaluation
4
IRB Process Determine what you plan to study Contact your IRB office
Take the Human Subjects ethics test Fill out the IRB application Begin your study AFTER obtaining IRB approval Sample IRB application available on the EA Google site
5
Why IRB with STARS is complex
Parental consent for participants who are minors Tracking collected data accurately and consistently over time Document EVERYTHING you do – you will forget!
6
Jump in and get started! We’ll refine your research project throughout the semester as we discuss research design, and can amend IRB as needed TIPS: Share research ideas in your EA cohorts Share resources & tools (e.g. surveys, consent forms) Replicate other STARS outreach studies
