4. A flower is the reproductive part of a plant.
Flowers may have both male and female parts or only one type.
The male part of the flower has anthers which contain pollen grains.
The female part has an ovary which contains ovules.
In pollination the pollen is transferred from the anthers to the ovary.
The joining of male and female cells is called fertilisation.
After fertilisation in a flowering plant, an ovule develops into a seed.
The seed contains an embryo (a new developing plant) and a store of food.
The ovary ripens into a fruit, carrying the seed or seeds.
