1 Lesson Starter Draw an animal cell and label the organelles.
Write a list of organelles found in a plant but not an animal. What is the function of the nucleus? Why do green plants have chloroplasts? Describe the cell membrane.

2 Learning Intention To label a microscope
To use a microscope to see cheek cells

3 Microscopes- organelles visible
Cells -too small to see Magnify Microscopes- organelles visible

4 Microscopes (copy) Cells are far too small to see with our naked eye; we use microscopes so we can see the cell’s organelles clearly.

5 Labelling the microscope
The eyepiece lens The part of the microscope we look through- it usually has a magnification of x10

6 Labelling the microscope
The objective lenses Different lenses with different magnifications to allow us to look closer (zoom) at our slides

7 Labelling the microscope
The stage The slide is placed upon the stage

8 Labelling the microscope
The stage clips Holds the slide in place

9 Labelling the microscope
Light source (mirror) Passes light through the slide and specimen

10 Labelling the microscope
Focusing dials Focuses the image to give a clear picture

11 Animal cells Plant + Animal cells We need to STAIN them to see
METHYLENE BLUE

12 Making a slide of cheek cells
Collect a slide, coverslip and bottle of methylene blue Use a sterile cotton bud to collect some cell from inside your cheek- BE GENTLE Roll the cotton bud over the glass slide Put the used cotton bud in the disinfectant Place 1 drop of meth blue over the cells and place the cover slip on the slide Look at your slide in the microscope and draw what you see
