Fictional Elements PLOT: the series of related events that make up a story. INTRODUCTION: tells the main characters & the setting. CONFLICT: the problem in the story Internal: struggles inside External: struggles outside RISING ACTION: the events leading up to the climax CLIMAX: the turning point; most suspenseful part FALLING ACTION: the events leading to the resolution RESOLUTION: the story is resolved

Characterization Direct: The author tells you what the character is like. Ex: Anne was energetic and social. Indirect: The author shows you what the character is like through their thoughts, feelings, actions, etc. Ex: Anne’s father was nervous about her ability to keep quiet during the day, so he got her a diary.

How do we get to know the character?
Character’s speech How he or she talks, the things he or she says Character’s appearance What is he or she wearing? Look tired? Old? Stressed? Serious? Goofy? Character’s private thoughts What does he/she think when no one else is listening? Character’s relationships Does he/she annoy others? Have many friends? Character’s actions What does the character do? Generous actions? Selfish?

Lisa helped the old lady cross the street. Christina is a shy girl with dark hair. David has a tall, athletic build and is good at basketball. She always says, “Life is what you make of it.” Bruce complains, “I don’t want to get up!” My friend is really generous; she’ll help anyone who asks.
