Learning Objectives I can describe the relationship between technology, engineering, and science. I can describe the characteristics of simple and complex technology. I can explain the relationship between engineering, science, and math. I can identify skills & steps used in the engineering design process.

Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
Burj Khalifa (Dubai, U.A.E.) Amazing Engineering
6
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
Why did the engineers & architects design the Burj Khalifa with a petal design at the base?
7
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process

Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
The top of the Burj Khalifa! (2,722 feet)
9
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
What is technology? - technology is the application of science for practical purposes & can include products, processes or systems - the method used to develop new technology is called the engineering design process
10
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
Is all technology complicated? - technology can be simple like a zipper or tape - however, technology can be complex like a particle accelerator, laptops, or telescopes Complete #7, pg.51
11
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
12
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
What do engineers do? - engineering is the application of science & math to solve real-life problems - there are many types of engineers: 1. Biomedical Engineer – design medical devices such as heart monitors, x-rays, & prosthetics
13
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
2. Chemical Engineer – design chemical products 3. Civil Engineer – design solutions to transport problems with bridges, railroads, tunnels, highways, and irrigation systems
14
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
4. Electrical Engineer – works with computers & machines to solve problems with electronics, electricity, & electromagnetism 5. Mechanical Engineer – works with computers & machines to solve problems
15
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
- engineers have to continually work around constraints, which are limitations to their work - to work within constraints, engineers often make trade-offs, which is giving up one advantage to keep another - the biggest constraints for an engineer are time, money, materials, labor, and the laws of physics
16
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
What skills are needed for engineering design? - every product ever created was built through the engineering design process & required these skills: 1. Creative Thinking 2. Using Math & Models 3. Thinking Methodically 4. Using Technology 5. Using Science Complete #12, pg.55
17
Unit 1, Lesson 4 – The Engineering Design Process
How does the engineering design process work?
