Overview: Students practice solving multistep number stories involving addition and subtraction. Vocabulary – Number Model and Unknown Quantity

What do you know from reading the story? What do you want to find out? How can you find the number of stories Terrell needs to climb? What will you do first? What strategy or tool can you use (for example, a pattern, diagram, number model, etc)?

You can write number models and use letters to stand for the unknown quantity.
What is the unknown quantity? Let’s say that “s” stands for the number of stories in the three buildings. What number model might we write, using a letter to stand for the unknown, to represent what we want to find out? Are you finished? Why or why not? Now let’s say that “n” stands for the number of stories Terrell still needs to climb. What number model could we write, using a letter to stand for the unknown to represent what we want to find out? What is a good estimate for the answer. What can you do if you get stuck?
