Growth and demand in the fitness industry – 9.5% of the current Irish population are gym members. Growing demand for qualified staff in gyms and health clubs with 9,500 direct employees. Current qualifications are focused on getting students through courses as quickly as possible. Courses are poorly regulated and minimum standards do not qualify PT’s with a suitable skillset to provide effective and safe exercise programmes. To quote Dr Liam Hennessy.. Blended Learning Lectures are delivered weekly via our Online Learning Platform. Approx. one weekend in every month you attend a practical workshop to supplement what you have learned online. Our courses give you the flexibility to study part time. Please see ‘Course Logistics’ slide When is the closing date for February enrolment? We will accept students until Friday Feb 3rd at the very latest. Note: Places are limited however. Would previous experience in training & coaching be beneficial? Beneficial yes, but not a pre-requisite. Obviously we would expect our students to have a high level of interest in coaching and training, and to be active themselves. What level qualification do you receive at the end of the course? NFQ Level 5 Diploma / NFQ Level 6 Certificate Are there any written exams in the course? 2 onsite sit down MCQ examinations, 2 onsite Practical Assessments in PT 2 Projects per module, 5 bi-weekly short MCQ type tasks based on lecture notes.

Can you choose when to interact with the online material throughout the week or will you have to sign in at particular times? You have total flexibility as to when you access lectures during the week and during each module. Do you have to register as a personal trainer with any authority? A REPs membership will help enhance your employment prospects, with a range of exercise and fitness facilities only employing REPs members. What are the average costs to get insurance? We recommend two Insurance companies to insure yourself through. They are: FITPRO Balens The average cost of insurance is roughly €120 - €140 per year.

Is the course open to international students? We accept international students but you will be required to attend workshops in order to complete the 2 onsite sit down MCQ examinations and the 2 onsite Practical Assessments in Personal Training. We would always highly recommend that you attend every workshop when it is practical to do so. To note these weekends also count to 20% of your overall final grade. What is the price of the course? €3,000 up front or €3,300 when payed by instalments. (3 x €1,100) Are both qualifications internationally recognised or are they only recognised in Ireland? The qualifications are recognised internationally. I'm a Qualified personal trainer (NCEF). Also have national certificate in S&C . I'm looking to upskill and would this be of any benefit to me or could you recommend another course? We would recommend beginning with our 9 month certificate in Functional Screening, Resistance Training and Advanced Resistance Training. This is stage one of our degree in Strength and Conditioning.

What course can those 30 credits be used towards? You can use the 30 credits gained to continue with the Setanta College Degree Pathway. Alternatively you can transfer these credits to a similar programme with another provider. Are there any Credits for functional screening module on its own? Yes the Functional Screening module carries 10 ECTS credits. Can fee payment be made by electronic transfer? You can pay online at or: By Electronic Transfer Standing order Over the phone

Do the lectures stay online for a number of weeks? All material is stored online up to a month after the module finishes. (There are three separate modules) How long does the Functional Screening module take? Three months If I have a full time job at present would it be too much to try and complete all the online course work each week? Our courses are designed in such a way that our students can study part-time. We recommend you set aside between 6-8 hours each week; this allows you to work or train full time.

Could you highlight the main benefits of doing this PT course compared with others I've seen available? Our course delivers weekly lectures over a 10 month period. There is simply no comparison to this level of detail were you to consider the 6-10 week courses that have flooded the market. The course tutors are qualified to MSc or PhD level. Guest lecturers include leading sport stars and internationally recognised coaches from around the world. The content delivered on this course draws on years of research and practice and is recognised by world leading authorities in sports science and performance such as World Rugby. The foundation to all Setanta College courses, including our four year Degree in S&C, is based around the ability to Functionally Screen your clients and athletes. This module is included in the Personal Training Diploma and allows you to offer bespoke exercise programmes as a result. Is there a future in working in gyms and what career opportunities exist? The health and fitness industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Ireland. 10% of the Irish population currently hold a gym membership, so the demand for qualified personal trainers has never been higher. Qualifying as a Personal Trainer allows you to open and operate your own business while the S&C element of the course allows you to work with teams and groups.
