Problem: American public upset that Nixon lied & Ford pardoned him Carter’s Solutions: “Citizens’ President”- walked (didn’t ride) during his inauguration Wore normal clothes Granted amnesty (pardons) for some of the Vietnam War draft evaders.

Problem: Cold War in “detente” but Carter still opposes some of their policies Problem: Cold War tension getting better but war still going on Solution: SALT II – reduced # of weapons held by the US & USSR Boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow (Soviet Union) Do you remember? Problem: Iran’s leader, the Shah, who had been exiled from Iran, found safety in the U.S. As a result, new leaders of Iran kidnapped US citizens living in Iran Carter’s Solution: Tried, but not able to free the American hostages
