Fig. 1 Time course of HIV-1 outbreak, 2012–2013, Tel Aviv, Israel. The incidence of primary HIV infection among people who inject drugs (PWID, dark bars) and non-PWID population (white bars) is described in three periods: baseline (1 January 2011 to 30 April 2012), outbreak (1 May 2012 to 30 April 2013), and post-intervention (1 May 2013 to 31 December 2014). The rise of primary HIV infection cases in non-PWID population close to the end of the outbreak period (July 2013) involved exclusively men who have sex with men and had clear temporal relation to the “Pride Month” held in Tel Aviv in June All these cases were with HIV-1 subtype B, none of them related to the outbreak strain. Fig. 2 Phylogenetic relatedness of outbreak and non-outbreak HIV-1 strains. (a) Phylogenetic tree describing the evolutionary relationship among 173 subtype A HIV-1 sequences (reverse transcriptase and protease) from naïve patients, including 30 case patients from the described PWID outbreak, presenting a major cluster. (b) Phylogenetic tree showing the cluster pattern of the 30 viral sequences in the PWID case patients. Bootstrap supports are indicated at the base of the corresponding branches.
