2/17/2019 5:30 PM Unit Focus and Objectives: Students consider the importance of leaving a legacy and the ways that we can leave a legacy, through our language, our families, or even our cells. Students also explore the issue of ownership and ethics of medical research. Student will explore and engage in the following topics using the anchor and related texts: medical ethics and family legacy, character influence on medical science, character development, comparing and contrasting points of view. Students will use and conduct research to build awareness about various diseases, viruses, and disabilities, which greatly impact the general public and the scientific community physically, emotional, and financially. Get a few students to state the reason why they agree or disagree. Legacy - something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past. Heritage - the traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a group or nation. Tradition - a way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family, or society. 10 Henrietta Lack’s Memory
In order to fully understand what Henrietta Lacks’ legacy has done for the world, we are going to watch this video. Before we watch this video, we review the focus questions on this handout you need to answer. This handout will assist your understanding of the background of Henrietta Lacks and her legacy. After the video, give the students 5 minutes to share with their groups. In addition, tell the students not to answer the personal questions in their groups.

The Argument: Who should have ownership of your body? We the people or the medical community? Tell watch this video. Ask the students to answer the personal questions independently. Then give the students 3 minutes to share with a person outside of their group. Ask the students to share their personal opinions. This series of activities and videos should have helped you in the beginning stages of the development of a strong argument in cell ownership. Have students fill out an index card and revisit Korn’s perspective.
