Five Themes of Geography
2
Warm Up: Which type of geographer would research whether or not extra busses are needed in an area on a Saturday night? Justify your answer.
3
Location, Location, Location
Theme 1: Location: describes where something is. Example: The building below is in San Francisco, California
4
Theme two Place: describes the features that make a site unique.
Example: Citi Field is where the New York Mets play their home games.
5
Theme 3 Regions: are areas that share common characteristics. Example: A desert. Deserts are regions because they share distinctive climates, animal and plant life.
6
Get moving! Theme 4: Movement: analyzes how and why people and things move. Why do people use escalators? Why would a person use a plane?
7
Last, but not least Human-Environment Interaction: the way people interact with their environment.
8
Work Time: Group A: Create your own example for each theme of geography. Analyze each definition and decide are there too many themes? Not enough? Or the right amount. Justify your answer. Group B: Differentiate between region, location and place. Why are they not one big theme? Group C: List three examples of how people move and identify one reason they may use that type of movement for each.
