The Earth System Mod.D U.1 L.1
2
EARTH’S SPHERES They all interact with each other Geosphere
What are they? Earth’s System is made up of 5 spheres: Geosphere Hydrosphere Cryosphere Atmosphere Biosphere They all interact with each other
3
1. Geosphere Earth’s interior, landforms, minerals etc, and all processes that shape earth Made up of Inner core, middle mantle, and outer crust
4
2. Hydrosphere All liquid water Is constantly moving
Ocean currents, wind/clouds, evaporation, rain/precipitation, rivers, underground water, in living things
6
3. Cryosphere Frozen water Mostly at the polar ice caps
Ice, sea ice, glaciers, icebergs, snow Melts and solidifies seasonally
8
4. Atmosphere Invisible gases surrounding the Earth Made up of:
78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 1% Carbon dioxide and other gases
9
Layers of the atmosphere
10
5. Biosphere Made up of: All living things and their environment
All organisms need air/oxygen, water, source of energy/food, shelter
11
Earth’s spheres interact
12
Life is made possible on Earth
When energy and matter cycles between the 5 spheres Energy – chemical – food Thermal – heat up spheres Physical – cause winds and currents Solar – THE SUN IS THE SOURCE OF ALL ENERGY ON EARTH
13
Is a way to keep track of energy transfers in and out of Earth systems
Earth’s Energy Budget Is a way to keep track of energy transfers in and out of Earth systems
15
Factors that affect Earth’s energy budget
Amount of greenhouse gases – H2O, CO2, methane, ozone, Amount of polar ice
16
Questions! Is one of Earth’s sphere more important for life than the other? Could life exist without one sphere? Or Is it essential that all spheres work together? Write your answers on this sheet.
