Parents information session November 2018

Sounds-Write Every sound is read & spelled using code consisting of 1, 2, 3 or 4 letters e.g. dog, street, night, dough Children learn the sounds, and the different combinations of letters that make the sounds- one sound, different spellings- and then combine these sounds to build words. Pupils also learn ‘one spelling, different sounds’ Consistent set of rules for all words.
3
Key skills Through Sounds-Write, pupils learn three key skills for successful reading and spelling: blending (pushing sounds together to build words), segmenting (pull apart the individual sounds in words) phoneme manipulation (the ability to insert sounds into words or take sounds out of words- used when sounds have more than one spelling.)
4
Initial code Single letter sounds
Simple two letter sounds: e.g. ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘th’ Double consonants ‘ff’, ‘ss’, ‘ll’, ‘zz’ Starts with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words e.g. ‘mat’ Develops to 5 letter words such as ‘quick’ New sounds are taught in the context of whole words.
5
Extended code One sound can be spelled in many different ways,
49 units, each approximately two weeks of learning. Year 1 covers all the sounds required for the statutory national ‘Phonics Screening check’. Year 2 covers further spellings of sounds already encountered & consolidates learning through practise.
6
Polysyllabic words Developed during extended code.
Pupils learn how to use skills to support spelling of any word.
7
Phonics at Netheravon Phonics is learned daily in EYFS & KS1.
A ‘Sounds-Write’ lesson lasts minutes in one or several sections. In Year 2, we are delivering a total of eight sessions a week (5 daily sessions and 3 extra sessions) for those pupils who did not pass the phonics screening check in year one.
