Mitosis Notes
2
Cell Division occurs in
a series of stages, or phases
3
Interphase 1st Phase - Interphase Chromosomes are replicated (doubled)
Chromosomes appear as threadlike coils called chromatin 3 parts of Interphase – G1, S and G2
4
Prophase 2nd Phase - Prophase
Chromatin coils up and condenses into chromosomes Nuclear membrane dissolves Spindle starts to form
5
Metaphase 3rd Phase – Metaphase
Sister chromatids line up at the MIDDLE of the cell Sister chromatids are attached to the spindle by the centromere
6
Anaphase 4th Phase – Sister chromatids split at the centromere
Sister chromatids move APART/AWAY from each other as the spindle fibers shorten
7
Telophase 5th Phase – Spindle dissolves Telophase
Nuclear membrane reforms around the TWO nuclei Chromosomes turn back into chromatin
8
Cytokinesis 6th Phase – Cytokinesis CELL MEMBRANE pinches off in between two cells and splits cell into two new cells Both cells have IDENTICAL DNA
