1 Factoring by GCF CA 11.0

2 Objective - To factor a polynomial by finding the GCF

3 Factoring by Grouping If a polynomial has four terms:
first put it in STANDARD FORM create groups of two find the GCF and leftovers for each group factor out a common binomial factor

4 Factoring by Grouping 12a3 - 9a2 + 20a - 15 3a2(4a - 3) + 5(4a - 3)

5 Try this! 9x3 + 18x2 + x + 2

6 Factoring with Opposites
OPPOSITES have the same absolute value but different signs. Examples: 3 and –3 x and –x (x – 5) and (5 – x)

7 Factoring with Opposites
3x3 - 15x x 3x2(x - 5) + 2(5 - x) 3x2(x - 5) + 2 (-1)(x - 5) 3x2(x - 5) – 2(x - 5) (x - 5)(3x2 - 2)

8 Try this! 15x2 - 10x3 + 8x - 12
