Are you a pain catastrophizer? Research has found that those who think their pain will get worse and feel they will be unable to cope actually suffer more pain than those who think less negatively. However, research has also found that therapy designed to reduce pain catastrophizing reduced rated pain levels too (Sullivan et al., 2006)

Measures of Dispersion - Range
Consider the following data sets: 100, 101, 99, 102, 98, 100 100, 40, 120, 60, 180, 100 Mean = 100 Range = (102-98)+1= 5 Mean = Range = (180-60)+1= 121 The range tells us the spread of scores and is easy to calculate. However, it ignores all but two scores – it does not tell us about the general spread or variability of other scores in the data set.

Measures of Dispersion –Standard Deviation
The standard deviation tells us about the variability of individual scores – how they are distributed around the mean. A low SD = scores are grouped around the mean. A high SD = scores are more widely spread out.
