Postwar Politics and Consumerism
The immediate postwar situation spurred 25 years of growth in the United States. GI Bill of Rights tried to deal with unemployment worries Veterans received priority for jobs Paid for up to four years of college or job training Many bought homes, got married Allowed many Americans to attend college, instead of the elite It was thought that the upward mobility of veterans would pay off in the form of increased income taxes. Bretton Woods Agreement created the International Monetary fund, valuing other currencies compared to the U.S. Dollar.

Policy of Containment USSR and the United States wanted to fill the power vacuum of Europe Stalin wanted a buffer zone in Europe to end Russia’s vulnerability George Kennan advises to utilize containment to stop the Russian machine. Winston Churchill says an “iron curtain” has descended upon Europe. Soviets gain atomic weapon by 1949. 1947, Britain can no longer protect Turkey and Greece from Communist advance Dean Acheson promoted the Truman Doctrine, a policy that would provide aid to those areas to prevent the spread of Communism.

National Security Council/Marshall Plan
National Security Act creates the NSC and the CIA. Marshall Plan also passed, providing 17 billion in aid to a group of Western countries. This would lead to Stalin launching a blockade on Berlin, located in Eastern Germany. We would launch operation Vittles to provide food and force the Soviets to end the blockade

Cold War in Asia Japan would be rebuilt and flourishing as military occupation ended in 1952. China would fall to communism and Mao Zedong in 1949. During this time we would see an expansion of atomic weapons and the emergence of the “Doomsday Clock” NSC-68- Created a larger military complex to successfully battle Communism. (Goes further than policy of containment)

The Korean War After WWII, both sides had troops in Korea, and neither side wanted to leave. Divided nation along 38th Parallel. Soviets leave in 1949 with strong army in place. US leaves months later, with a relatively weak army. N. Korea Communists invade S. Korea in 1950. Americans win UN agreement to invade after the Soviets boycott the meeting. After MacArthur decides to move troops into N. Korea, it goes from “containment” to a fight against communism. American and UN forces take the northern half of Korea easily. China gets scared. They send armies in and push back forces to the 38th.

Firing of MacArthur and Stalemate
MacArthur said, “we are really fighting the Chinese, lets bomb them.” Controversy ensues when Truman and MacArthur come into conflict. He writes a letter to Representative Joseph Martin. “There is no substitute for victory.” Truman hears about it, and removes MacArthur for insubordination. 69% side with MacArthur, and it shows in the election of 1952. Fighting stays within the 38th parallel as a truce is reached between the two sides. It takes two years, but the conflict generally ends in 1953 in a stalemate.
