1 Effective Feedback Through Marking
Design & HVC Focus your marking on each project foci that students have had to think about and produce themselves. This is more time effective. During your marking ensure that you: Say why an aspect of work is good e.g. Good because you have………. Express improvement comments as questions e.g. Could you give an example…? How could you explain this…? How is this different from…? If students peer assess work ensure it is against clear success criteria. Remind them to ensure their feedback is: Kind Focused Specific When the marked work is returned plan for DIRT (Directed Improvement & Reflection Time) in your lesson. This is dedicated time of students to read and respond to your improvement questions. At KS3, summative assessment needs to be reviewed once students have rotated using + - = stickers If the learning gap is not closed then a further improvement question may be required. At the next marking point acknowledge the student responses to the improvement questions and that the learning gap has been closed. E.g. well done, spot on, ✔ etc. Verbal Feedback: Rather than stamping students’ books with the verbal feedback stamp get the students to write their feedback in green pen explaining what they have to change/develop to improve their work.
