Doug – I am Doug Haubert, City Prosecutor for the City of Long Beach. It is my pleasure to be here representing Mayor Robert Garcia. I would like to introduce my co-presenter, Neighborhood Relations Officer, Tracy Colunga. She and her team provide staff support to develop and implement Safe Long Beach.

Tracy – It is my pleasure to provide an overview of Safe Long Beach with City Prosecutor Haubert. (Read slide) Long Beach is unique in that we are addressing violence across the life span. We know trauma is fluid and flows back and forth from the home, to school, and out into the community.

Doug –Coordination Team – Members serve in an advisory role to provide oversight, policy guidance, and accountability. Members meet quarterly to assess implementation progress, receive updated assessments, review workgroup reports, and provide strategic direction. (Policy Level)

15. Initiative Alignment May 2014—City Council adopted Safe Long Beach.
October 2014—DOJ Anti-Gang Strategy Grant awarded to the City Prosecutor’s Office.
January 2015—CALGRIP Grant awarded to Development Services Department.
January 2015—City Council and the School Board adopted President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge Resolution.
February 2015—Consolidation of Programs under Neighborhood Relations Division.
Doug – Thanks to the US DOJ, my office was awarded the DOJ Anti-Gang Strategy Grant where we provide truancy intervention efforts through the PACT program. This program holds accountable the parents of the most chronic students in the district. In addition, the funding provides the Gang Op-Out program where former gang members can go through a vetted process to op-out of the local gang injunctions.
Tracy – In addition, we are using state CALGRIP funding to provide Prevention, Focused Prevention, Intervention, and Suppression. The project goal is to reduce gang membership and gang victimization among at-risk female youth ages within Long Beach who have been trafficked by gang members.
City Council adopted the My Brother's Keeper Community Challenge on 1/20/15. The Mayor will invite a MBK Task Force made up of City, school district, and community leaders to develop a MBK local action plan as prescribed by the Whitehouse.
