1 Ch 3-3 Notes: Refraction Refraction: the bending of a wave front as the wave front passes b/t two substances in which the speed of the wave differs. -the bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another. -when the medium in which a wave is traveling changes.

2 Lens: a transparent object that refracts light waves such that they converge or diverge to create an image. -a transparent object that forms images by refracting light.

3 Convex lens: a lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges.
Forms both real images and virtual images. Ex) magnifying glass, lens of human eye

4 Concave lens: a lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges
Concave lens: a lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges. *When light travels thru a concave lens, light rays are refracted and bent away from each other.

5 *Rainbows form when the white light from the sun is refracted by H2O droplets. * A rainbow forms when white light separates into different colors during refraction.

6 Telescope vs Light microscope: They both use two convex lenses to form images. The objective lenses form real images. The ocular lenses magnify the real image.
