1
Do Now Name all three branches of government and what powers each has.
2
Checks and Balances Ms. Baquedano
3
Checks and Balances System that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other two branches
4
Why? Framers were very scared of having a strong national government
Created 3 branches, but still needed to balance their power
5
Check Allows one branch to block the actions of another
Ex: President can veto a law Congress proposes Ex: Supreme Court can declare an executive order unconstitutional
6
Balance Allows the other branches to have a role in the others’ actions Ex: Judges and ambassadors are only appointed by the president once the Senate confirms them
7
Other examples Congress can override a veto the president makes
Supreme Court can declare a law signed by president and made by Senate unconstitutional President can make treaties with countries, once Congress approves
