VDOT’s Responsibilities
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for: Building Maintaining Operating the Virginia's roads, bridges and tunnels American Association of Sate Highway Transportation Officials – educational curriculum based outreach programs targeted for K-12 – get kids interested in STEM careers in transportation. TRAC™ (Transportation and Civil Engineering) is a hands-on, educational outreach program of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The TRAC™ program is designed for integration into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). State Departments of Transportation provide the program free of charge to middle and high schools in their state. RIDES – 150 activities – Roadways into Development Elementary Students K-8 TRAC – 8 modules for middle to highs chools students focused on transportation themes like bridge builders, construction and design, environmental. Technology and safety.

Full-time students attending a 2 or 4 year program at an accredited college Internships in business and engineering

Partnership with Virginia State University to provide non-paid work experience Students are full-time college students majoring in engineering

Mayor’s Youth Program Partnership with the city of Richmond to provide work experience to youth which includes: job readiness training, leadership development, exposure to entrepreneurship, mentoring, and post-secondary career exploration

Students and recent graduates are hired each year in our programs Market our programs at career fairs, associations, and organizations Provide real, hands-on work assignments Society of Women Engineer, Society Hispanic Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers and Women in Transportation
