Setting Standards What is a Standard?
A written document that outlines and explains how your company will meet the established program requirements A clear standard sets the foundation for a successful program year Ask participants to provide their definition of what a standard is. CLICK to reveal the WSIB safety group definition of a standard. ‘Standards’ are written statements outlining expectations, policies, procedures and workplace rules for health and safety. Explain to participants that each health and safety program element should have a standard, or set of rules, that tell everyone in the workplace what to do and when. 6
7
Setting Standards Why set Standards?
Standards establish your health and safety program expectations to meet program requirements Standards indicate who does what, when and sometimes how and why Standards set the ‘bar’ against program requirements which you can evaluate whether or not your health and safety program is working.
8
Setting Standards General guideline: Standards must conform with the
WSIB Safety Groups Employer Guidelines Requirements (Key to success) OHSA and regulations Standards should be written on company letterhead and signed by a senior management member. 8
9
What could you include in your Standard?
Purpose Scope Reference Materials Roles and Responsibilities Communication Training/Implementation Procedures Evaluation Acknowledge Success and Make Improvements Forms. 9
