FT is expressed in the leaves under conditions that are favourable for flowering, for example in response to the appropriate photoperiod as well as environmental cues such as temperature. FT protein enters the phloem and is translocated to the shoot apical meristem (SAM). At the SAM, FT interacts with the bZIP transcription factor FD, enabling the activation of floral meristem identity genes such as APETALA1 (AP1) in the domain where FD is expressed.
