Homework in Year 3 All children need to practice their English and numeracy skills frequently for short periods of time. The aim should be that they read a little every day, practice times tables every day and do some writing three times per week. They should not work for long sessions on a single piece of work. Multiplication – learn and memorise the x2, x5 & x10 tables. This should be extended to the x3, x4 and x8 tables. They should write out the tables, saying them out loud as they write them. Repetition is the key to times tables. When they have learned to say and write them in order the next step is to be able to recall them randomly, and ideally out of context. The aim is to gain automaticity. Spelling –A list of the Statutory spellings for year 3 and 4 is attached. Ask your child to put these words into sentences, this will show understanding of the meaning of the words. Focus on having clear sentences that follow the conventions of grammar and with excellent presentation and handwriting. Try and develop the sentences so that they use different openers, and expand them for example by adding description Reading – All children should read to an adult 10 minutes every day. Please encourage them to discuss the book. It is useful to ask different questions about the book for example; Can they retell the story? How do characters behave? What is the meaning of particular words? Can they think of a different word that would keep the same meaning? Worksheets – We have produced an English and Maths booklet to be completed over the half term. This means you can fit homework around your children’s busy lives. The booklet should be returned to school by the first Friday after the half term holiday. PR
