2. Structure
Divide the composition into different sections and arrange the order
Develop a chord progression for each section
Ensure that each section is of similar lengths

3. Melody
Base the notes of the melody on the notes of the accompanying chord
Use a combination of steps and leaps
Use a contrast of long and short notes
Use techniques such as sequences, imitation and repetition

4. Harmony Don’t always use the tonic in the bass
Use suspensions and rich chords to add tension
Use different inversions of chords
Possibly divide sections by writing in two different keys and modulating between them
