1 Outsourcing the Truth “One must checketh thyself, previous to thus wreckething thine own self!”

2 Rationale Some say, “truth is relative.” Is it? How do you know who or what to trust when you have an important question? What constitutes a trusted source or authority to speak on any given subject? It could be said that life, is in itself, an on-going research project. Therefore, the “sources” we allow to shape our thoughts, opinions, and beliefs are extremely powerful influences on who we are, and who or what we become. I guess that means we better be very good at vetting those influences, because they have the power to be either, life-giving, life-taking, or maybe both!

3 Objectives Identify characteristics of primary and secondary sources.
Formulate examples of both, effective and ineffective - primary and secondary sources. Predict the consequences of choosing poor or ineffective sources.

4 Instructions Complete the blank fields and steps for each of the following slides. You may use the course lessons, digital textbook, and the internet to complete the assignment. This will look and feel a little bit like a virtual tour of a museum or art exhibit. Use the slides to walk you through this assignment one piece at a time.

5 A closer look… Take a few minutes to get some background info on identifying primary vs secondary sources. Cheekylibrarian, YouTube, Examples of Primary and Secondary Sources, Raw link:

6 Identifying Primary s*o*u*r*c*e*s
1 Primary sources are documents, images or artifacts that provide firsthand testimony or direct evidence concerning an historical topic under research investigation. Which of the following is least likely to be a primary source for a research project about key battles of the Civil War? Field surgeon’s medical journal Preserved uniform of Union soldier 1965 Presidential speech commemorating 200 year anniversary of conclusion of Civil War [Explain here]

7 Hours worked by employee injured factory worker
Identifying secondary s*o*u*r*c*e*s 2 A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or period after the event, or has occurred from the analysis of legitimate primary sources. You are writing an argumentative essay on the impact of child labor during the Industrial Revolution. 1. Label the following sources as either “primary” or “secondary.” Child Labor Political Cartoon Informative YouTube video Factory ledger/ Hours worked by employee Police report for injured factory worker [Type Here] [Type Here] [Type Here] [Type Here]

8 3 Identifying secondary s*o*u*r*c*e*s
A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or period after the event, or has occurred from the analysis of legitimate primary sources. You are writing an argumentative essay on the impact of child labor during the Industrial Revolution. 2. Rank the hypothetical sources in order of importance or usefulness to your research (1-being most useful thru 4-being least useful), then explain how you might use them in your writing. Usefulness RANKING SOURCE Explain how you might use each of these sources as useful research in writing your argumentative essay (hypothetical scenario only)? Police Report for injured coworker Child Labor Political Cartoon Factory ledger: Employee work hours Informative YouTube video

9 Opposing perspectives
4 Opposing perspectives Provide a context where a typically unreliable source could be used as a primary source. Scenario: **BREAKING NEWS**….. Multiple sources out of the fictitious nation of Verskechiplas indicate their citizens are in full revolt against an oppressive dictator, named Ikeelu Ole. Early indicators are that citizens are upset about the recent disappearances of several people known to be publicly protesting the corrupt leader! Apparently, once these people go missing, they are NEVER seen or heard from again. The citizens of Verskechiplas are doing anything and everything they can to get a full revolution up and running. Their goal is to remove President Ikeelu Ole from one way or another…..peacefully, or with violence if necessary. This story is happening right now and the world is watching! Stay tuned for more information on this late-breaking story…….. Social media platforms are extremely power tools for information-sharing, yet those powers can be used for good and evil. In other words, not everything we see and hear on social media is 100% true……or even 10% true! Using the scenario above, describe a situation where we might able to use one person’s social media feed as a trusted, primary source! [Type here]
