SWBAT: 1. Use the hubble tuning fork to classify galaxies. WOD: Initial Activity: Read the about seeing The Milky Way from Earth and describe how it is possible to take a picture or see the Milky Way from Earth. Cite details from the article to support your answer. Mini Lesson: What is the Hubble tuning fork and how is it used to classify galaxies? Activity: Classifying galaxies lab. Summary: Why is the tuning fork a good way of classifying the galaxies? Is there a better way?

Using the Hubble Tuning Fork Ellipticals- Sphereoidal, no disk E0- roundest E3- roundness decreases E5- Starts to get more flat (egg shape) E7- flattest Spirals- S0- Looks elliptical but has a disc shape Sa- big bulge, tightly wound arms Sb- medium wound arms Sc- small bulge, loosely wound arms Barred Spirals- have a distinct line or bar that stretches out from the center, bulge in the center, and arms that spin out.
4
Using the Hubble Tuning Fork How to Classify: Observe the picture of the galaxy and compare it to the two pictures provided for each type of galaxy in the EHCS. Choose the one that best matches and support how you knew using evidence from the picture and text.
5
Model of how to observe a galaxy and classify it using the Hubble tuning fork.
6
Compare pictures A and B to the fork and decide their classification. Justify your response using details from the picture, fork, and your notes. A B
