3 Thursday 5 April 2018: Objective: I can edit my essay. I can peer edit essays.

4 Edit Your Essay!!! Take out four different colors of writing utensils
One color will be used for round one of editing. A second color will be used for round two. A third color that is different from the other two will be used for editing the third time. The fourth color will be use for editing when you read out loud. For each round make sure you are using the different colors for each round. Use the editing marks, as well as making notes on what you need to change and making corrections. I must see four different colors of editing on your essay for credit!

5 Edit Your Essay: Round One!
Go through and read your essay silently to yourself. You are looking at the content of your essay. Use your first color and use editing marks to make sure that you have a thesis that follows the prompt, topic sentences that support the thesis, quotes that support the topic sentences and commentary that discuss the quotes. When you’re finished put your writing utensil down.

6 Edit Your Essay: Round Two!
Go through and read your essay silently to yourself. You are looking at the parts of your essay. Use your second color and editing marks to make sure that you have a hook, thesis, transitions, 2 quotes per body paragraph, 2 commentaries per quote, introduction and conclusion. When you’re finished put your writing utensil down.

7 Edit Your Essay: Round Three!
Go through and read your essay silently to yourself. You are looking at the conventions of your essay. Use your third color and editing marks to make sure that you capitalize at the beginning of sentences and the pronoun “i”. Check your spelling, punctuation, grammar, verb agreements, etc. When you’re finished put your writing utensil down.

8 Edit Your Essay: Round Four!
Go through and read your essay out loud to yourself. You are looking at the flow of your essay. Use your fourth color and editing marks to make sure that everything flows, makes sense and is organized. If you stumble while reading, you probably need to reword the sentence. If it seems like a sentence is taking forever to read, look to see if you need a comma, or to split it up. When you’re finished put your writing utensil down.

9 Peer Edits! You will be moving around.
Keep your essays out and on the desk. Take a writing utensil with you. For each round, you will stand up and move forward one desk. The essay that is on the desk in front of you will be the one that you edit for that round. Put your initials at the end next to any editing mark that you put on the paper. We will move around four times. Let’s practice!
