Appositives An appositive is a noun or pronoun that DIRECTLY FOLLOWS and RENAMES another noun or pronoun in the sentence. Many appositives are set off by commas on either side, though this is not always the case. My Dog Spot is covered in mud. (Spot renames dog)

Appositive Phrases An appositive phrase contains an appositive and all the words that modify the appositive. This is the only phrase that could easily be confused with the subject of a sentence. Suellen, Sally’s sister, hides snakes under the sofa.
