DNA degradation is strictly controlled in wild-type, but not in recA cells. A fraction of anucleate cells was determined in wild-type (AB1157) and recA populations, which were either unirradiated (left side of the panel) or irradiated with 400 Gy of γ-rays and then incubated for 90 min at 37° (right side of the panel). Cells were fixed with osmium tetroxide, their DNA stained with DAPI, and visualized by fluorescence microscopy.
